Gernika and the Bizkaian Coast
7 Hours
Your guide and private car and driver will meet you at your hotel at 10:00 a.m. to begin your trip to Gernika, the spiritual home of the Basques and the seat of Basque nationalism. Gernika, destroyed in a Nazi air raid in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, was immortalized in Picasso's most famous painting, Guernica. See the symbol of the Independence Movement, the remains of the ancient Gernika Oak Tree under which Basques have elected their officials since medieval times. Visit the Gernika Peace Museum (closed on Monday) and the Assembly House. Continue to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where its marshlands and holm oak trees provide shelter to unique species of birds. View the famous surfing beach at Mundaka, and enjoy lunch in Portuondo Restaurant, known for its excellent fish and meats (additional cost). Proceed to Bermeo, an important fishing port. Next stop is the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, uniquely situated on a rock joined to the coast. The last stop is Bakio, a popular village in summer, before you return to your hotel.

The Wines of Rioja
10 Hours
The tempranillo grape together with the region's excellent climate and geological conditions are responsible for the outstanding quality of Rioja wines. Depart your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the Rioja region to meet your guide. Visit Laguardia, a fortified town of the Middle Ages. Stroll its narrow streets, see the dancing figures on the Town Hall clock, and tour the 14th century church of Santa Maria with its extraordinary façade of sculptured polychromied stone. Learn how wine was produced in former times, when every building had its own winery! Then visit a traditional winery for wine tasting, such as Viñedo del Contino, to taste three of its renowned wines: Contino, Via del Olivo, and Contino Graciano; Conde de los Andes, Hemmingway's favorite that dates to the 16th century; or Granja de Remelluri, one of the most select wines of Rioja. Lunch in a wine cellar (additional cost) will follow. After lunch, visit the "Chabola de la Hechicera Dolmen", a funerary monument dating from 2100 B.C. with fantastic views of the area. On the way have a look at Gehrys new hotel built within the Marques de Riscal Winery. Then drive by YSIOS, the contemporary winery designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to conform to the Rioja landscape - from a distance it's hard to distinguish the building from the mountains behind it.
A visit to the Museum of the Culture of Wine (closed Mondays, additional charge) is recommended for those interested in wine culture.
