The Spanish / French Basque Coast
7 1/2 Hours
Your private guide and car and driver will meet you at your hotel at 10:00 a.m. for the drive to Biarritz, France, the largest resort on the French Atlantic Coast. Admire its breathtaking coastline and stroll its picturesque streets and elegant shops. Drive to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and walk along the Rue Gambeta to see the 15th century Saint Jean Baptiste Church where Louis XIV married Maria Teresa, the Infanta of Spain and future Queen of France. Then drive along the coast to Hendaya, the last village in France, and on to Hondarriabia, the first in Spain. A fortified town located at the top of a hill overlooking the French border, Hondarriabia has an interesting medieval quarter where some of the villas date to the 17th century. The Iglesia de Santa Maria, a Gothic structure that was restored in the 17th century and given a baroque tower, was the site of the proxy wedding of Louis XIV and Maria Teresa in 1660. See the 16th century Castillo de Carlos V, now a small parador. Then visit La Marina, the fishing district in the lower part of town with colorful houses, flower draped balconies, painted boats and taverns featuring delicious seafood pintxos, the perfect place for lunch.

Tour both the permanent collection containing works of such greats as Picasso, Warhol and de Koonig, as well as temporary exhibits from New York. Then walk along the bank of the Nervion River to the revitalized area of Bilbao, followed by a walking tour of the Casco Viejo, or old quarter of the city. See the Church of San Anton, the Siete Calles, the Santiago Cathedral and the Plaza Nueva. You will have free time in the Old City to enjoy lunch and do a little shopping. Meet your driver at 4:30 p.m. to begin the return to San Sebastian, taking the coastal road to Getaria, a typical Basque fishing village with its famous hill shaped like a mouse.
